Travelling Safely on the School Bus PC CD Rom
“We held a bus safety day, and involved the Road Safety Officer and the school bus contractor. All the children who travel by bus worked through the interactive programme. They were thrilled at being asked to sign their certificate and couldn’t wait to take it home to be signed by their parents. We put up a wall display of over 160 certificates and also held a competition on Safe Travel to School.”

Travelling Safely on the School Bus
Travelling to and from school by bus is an everyday occurrence for many thousands
of primary schoolchildren. But for some young children it can be a daunting experience,
travelling unaccompanied without direct adult supervision for the first time, while
for others the excitement of meeting friends on the school bus can sometimes lead
to a disregard for the basic rules of safe travel.
This interactive training course aims to promote a positive attitude to travelling
safely on the bus, whether this is a daily occurrence or on an occasional school
outing.
Research shows that, although school bus travel is relatively safe compared to other
forms of transport, the risk of accident or injury increases whenever pupils are
boarding or alighting from the bus. This course gives guidance on the safe actions
to take at all stages of the journey.
At the end of the training presentation there is a quiz. If all of the questions are answered correctly (a second attempt is allowed for incorrect answers) then a certificate can be printed with the child's name and the name of the school.
On the certificate there is space for the signature of the child, their teacher and their parent or guardian. By signing this the child is agreeing to act safely while travelling to and from school.
This is a contract between the child and the school, in a more acceptable format for young children. For perhaps the first time the child is asked for their signature, indicating that they accept the need to act safely in this situation.
